Mother's Day and Shrovetide

Last Sunday was Shrovetide or Lent Sunday  celebrated.
Birch shrubs are decorated with colored feathers and green leaf shoots eventually burst out after a week in our hot kitchen. They are made and sold every year by elderly women 70 - 80 years of age. Gunnar's mother used to make them, and we buy some bunches every year in memory of her.

The second Sunday of February is Mother's Day in Norway. This was the first Mother's Day when my Mom wasn't here.I actually didn't look that much forwards to the celebration. But Serina did. She had prepared the most beautiful breakfast when I came into the kitchen. The white Wedgewood porcelain was decorated with a flower my mother once made of silver strings and pantyhose fabrics.
Strawberries are my favorite.

The table was wonderfully decorated, almost made for Ruby Tuesday.

Since our car has been out of function the last three weeks there was no way Serina could buy anything but groceries.
My card was made on her iPad. "Happy Mother's Day. Today the waffle hearts shall beat." Wasn't that a sweet promise?
We had a great celebration. Some naps in between delicious dinner and coffee, but the "day" lasted till 2 hours passed midnight.

Besides waiting upon me in every possible way, my daughter had also thought out a present from the colonial store. Irish beer. I hadn't tasted it since the two of us toured Ireland in May. It really was a taste of Ireland. There are still some left in fridge!!

I like the colorful flowers we see as Lent begins - they look alive, and of course the promise and fulfillment of life we will see at the end of Lent on Easter Sunday. Life eternal...

Happy Mother's Day - Serina was so happy to let you know she loves her mother a lot! A day to celebrate with mom and family starting with waffles...so nice!

That Irish beer is so special, Elise. Having such a gift to trigger memories of a happy and unforgettable time - well, you just can't beat that.

Your birch shrub tradition is fascinating. What is the story of women 70-80 years old making them. That is an intriguing arrangement.

Thanks so much on the wedding comment. The dress she finally picked is so completely HER. Krista tried on the dresses you saw pictured and was surprised at how much she liked the style but then, in the finally lap, she went to her traditional favorite style and I'm so glad she did. It's perfection.

Krista has the face and shape to make any dress look fine. I'm so looking forward to seeing the wedding pictures...in December.
Norwegian Females' Health Organization was founded during WW1. Women organized and gathered money as well as building permissions, educating employees for Hospitals for Rheumatism ( we still have one on our town, tuberculosis, (they are shut down, no need for them anymore), children's hospitals, care and homes for elderly, and now also with a special focus on women's health issues, they have done an amazing job. These days only few are willing to work hard and unpaid throughout the year to raise money. The housewives of the fifties found that quite natural and they still keep on keeping on. Therefor they go into the woods to gather birch shrubs in January, use evenings to attach the feathers with thin steel wire, then making bouquets and finally going, not driving from house to house to get them sold. "Our" sales lady often comes cycling in February wind and snow.
Gunnar's Mother was active in this organization, my mother worked in two other voluntary organizations. I so admire what is done by love and not for money.

Your beautiful girl couldn't have made your Mothers Day any more special! I can't imagine a better gift.

Tell Serina her mom's Texas-Norwegian sister sends her a special hug for being such a thoughtful daughter! :)

Your daughter is so sweet and sensitive. She made it a good day after all. I dreaded Mother's Day for years. First of all, I wasn't able to have children and then when my mom died I felt bad. But now I'm fine with it and love to celebrate other mothers. I'm sending you a long distance hug today dear friend.

Love,
Debbie
