THE NAMING OF A CAT

Originated by MaryT, check hers for today.

My first name was not often used within my birth family. To my parents I was "Kitten"or "Kit", to my only sibling, younger bro' Kel, I was "Kitten Meow" with an emphasis on meow. Till we got a wonderful gray and white kitten of our own. Then a brand new cat-language evolved, and I became Felisol/Fel /Whel.
Till this day that's how my brother names me.

One might wonder if that's related
to my choleric nature. I certainly do not climb the trees anymore.
Only seldom use my claws to scratch.

However, I still purr when being cuddled.

And I love to go hunting at night!

The Naming of Cats

TS Eliot

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES. First of all, there's the name that the family use daily, Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James, Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey - All of them sensible everyday names. There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter, Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames: Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter - But all of them sensible everyday names. But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular, A name that's peculiar, and more dignified, Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular, Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride? Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum, Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat, Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum - Names that never belong to more than one cat. But above and beyond there's still one name left over, And that is the name that you never will guess; The name that no human research can discover - But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess. When you notice a cat in profound meditation, The reason, I tell you, is always the same: His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name: His ineffable effable Effanineffable Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

I had a cat named Blacknight when I was a little girl.

We had an Arthur, then a Willow and the latest was called Jicky.
Nice colorful shot.

We dispensed with typical cat names, such as 'Fluffy'. Our cats have been Humphrey, Linus and Rigby. Sensible names, you might say.

Not to be outdone, but when I was growing up we had dogs named Boris and Maggie. What's in a (pets) name, anyway!

LOVE this post, Felisol. I'm proud of you for rarely scratching anymore. You are a good kitty. ;-)

I have a hard time imagining you ever being "catty" enough for the emphasis on "meow". But we're talking about brothers here, so I guess all bets are off!

That photo is real art work Felisol.

Does that nick name mean anything in paricular?

We 've never had cats as pets. Dogs we have named and we have to consider the pronunciation too as non -English speaking would mis - pronounce them.

My sister named Sheeba.

Our oldest cat Smokey passed away a few months ago but we have Heidi - she hid a lot when my son rescued her.
I love your photo! Love the framing and the colors. Those napkins are so very pretty.

I love TS Eliot.

I think it's good for a girl to keep her claws about her, even if she doesn't have cause to draw them that often. Just the having them means they won't be needed as much.

My dearest Felisol,

Thank you for visiting my blog today. I hope it is okay to write a reply to you here. Dear one, I weep with you, and I don't have many words to say to you for now, except that I am praying for God to be your comfort and your strength.

How completely charming, Fel. I had not read that little poem in years and as a cat lover, I sure enjoyed it. We have had a Poochie, a Smudge, a Greystock, and a Misty. We have had Puma Kitty, and Goldy, Kitty and Swinglow. Famously, we have had P.A. Kat - known effectionally as Paw Kitty. She was the most elegantly named of our cats. And finally, we had many many Bean cats all of them white and black.

Hi Felisol, what a delightful Ruby Tuesday...the excerpt from TS Elliot is wonderful, I enjoyed it very much.
We once had a cat named Midnight, she was never called that. She was Mum Cat until the day she didn't come home again.

Regards,
Eaton. :)

Thanks for the T.S. Elliot. Funny how names work. As someone else said, I can't imagine you being "catty," at least not the way Americans use that phrase. My cats have dozens of names. When I got her Tara Grace had been named Isis by the people that found her. It didn't feel right to me. When I came up with Tara Grace, she looked at me as though... "finally, you got it right!"

I love your picture... and those Spring flowers in the post below are wonderful. There's still a little unmelted snow in my backyard but there are subtle signs of Spring. Soon. It will be here soon.

Our cat we had in Friendswood we named Farah Fawcett Mineou (sp?). Our daughter was young. I had just brought this cat (kitten) home, it was free in a box outside the grocery store.
So let a neighbor kid name it, you won't be dissapointed.
..
I don't have a Ruby Red, I am taking thing easy on the blog front and doing a lot of work around here. It is about our turn to travel in April. Welcome back, I know you liked the Dylan concert in a big way! I am envious.

This made me think of the name God has for us, that no one else knows. When we stand before Him, He will call us by that special name, and we will feel truly known and truly loved.

Years ago I had a cat named "Twinkie" kind of like the snack cakes we have here in America. I think one of my girls named her that. She was an odd kitty to be sure!

Our youngest daughter and her new hubby have 2 kitty's. They got "Bear" at an adoption weekend at a pet store last summer. He lived with our Son In Law at his parents house until they got married in Nov. On New Years Eve, we looked outside and there was a stray kitty on our porch. He was really little and barely weaned. Laura and Les were over and they both immediately decided he needed to live at their apartment and that Bear needed a little "brother". Hence, Mr Grizzly went to live with him. He's odder than my Twinkie cat ever was!

He and Bear are as close as can be and love each other and fight with each other, just like human brothers do! I am a cat person but for now, we have a Cockatiel, Squeegy, Charlie's bird.
